Overview
The Arab Foundation for Missing Persons (AFMP) is an independent, non-profit humanitarian and scientific organization dedicated to identifying human remains and supporting families of missing persons across the Arab world. Founded by a group of volunteer experts in forensic medicine and related fields, AFMP combines cutting-edge science with deep cultural sensitivity to provide answers and closure to families affected by conflict, displacement, and violence.
Mission
To identify human remains in post-conflict and mass-displacement environments through advanced forensic methods and to provide humanitarian, psychological, and legal support to families of missing persons.
AFMP’s mission is grounded in the belief that every individual deserves dignity in life and death. By restoring identity to the missing and supporting those left behind, the foundation contributes to healing communities and promoting truth and justice.
Core Values,
Key Activities
1. Identification of Human Remains.
Using DNA profiling, dental records, radiographic imaging, and anthropological analysis, AFMP helps identify victims of war, detention, and forced disappearance. This includes exhumation work, chain-of-custody documentation, and data matching with family reference samples.
2. Mobile and Fixed Forensic Labs
AFMP supports the establishment of PCR and DNA analysis labs in conflict zones and underserved areas. These facilities allow for rapid identification and reduce dependency on foreign institutions.
3. Training and Capacity Building
AFMP offers certified training programs for students, medical professionals, and law enforcement personnel in:
Forensic pathology
DNA extraction and analysis
Disaster victim identification
Ethical practices in humanitarian forensics
Partner universities include Damascus University (Syria), Swedish University (Uppsala), and others across the region.
4. Awareness and Outreach
Through lectures, webinars, exhibitions, and publications, AFMP raises awareness about the rights of families of missing persons and best practices in forensic identification. It also hosts virtual events via Zoom and other platforms to reach wider audiences.
